PUNE: The fifth Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan (BVS) and Defence Expo started at Fergusson College on May 11. The expo, which ends on May 14, is based on the theme ‘Confluence of Traditional and Modern Sciences - A New Integral Vision for Development’ in the defence sector.

Many academic institutions such IITs, NITs and IISER have showcased their achievements at the expo.

A student, Gautam Nandashivkhere, who was visiting the expo, said, “New types of guns are displayed at the expo which are still not integrated into the Army. Different calibres of the AK-47 gun can be seen at the expo.” 

Another visitor, Akash Shinde, said, “This is a very good initiative and more such expos should happen in India so that the people know the current trends in the Indian defence organisations.”

On day one, various stalls were put up by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Hyderabad-based National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB), Kolkata-based Bose Research Institute and Mumbai-based Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) on the main ground of Fergusson College. Presentations by Prof MN Sharma, Nachiket Patwardhan, MS Vallathan and Dr Kasim Mookhitar will be held on other days.

BHARATIYA VIGYAN SAMMELAN - The 5th Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan was inaugurated by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu via video link on Thursday.  - “The scientific research work being undertaken work is being spread across the country with the help of the Vigyan Sammelan,” said Prabhu through video message. - During the inauguration, Vijay Bhatkar, Chancellor Nalanda University and National President of ViBha, PK Mehta, DG, DRDO, Venkatesh Parlikar Director, R&DE (Engineers), Prof Vasant Shinde, VC, Deccan College, Jayant Sahasrabudhe, National Organising Secretary, ViBha were present. - The official inauguration of this Sammelan would be carried out on Friday at Fergusson College. State Information and Broadcasting Minister Col Rajyavardhan Rathore, State Education Minister Vinod Tawde among others will be present.
