A celebration of F N Souza’s artistic legacy in Goa

THE EXHIBITION

In/Of Goa: Souza at 100 is an exhibition in honour of Francisco Victor Newton de Souza’s birth centenary (1924-2002).

MODERNIST PAINTER

F N Souza is one of India’s most significant modern painters of the 20^th century.

BORN IN SALIGAO, 1924

The exhibition sheds light on the profound influence of  Souza’s birthplace on his artistic journey.

PAG FOUNDING MEMBER

F N Souza was one of the founders of the influential, Bombay-based Progressive Artists’ Group, which helped shape modern Indian art.

IN THE BRITISH ART SCENE

When he moved to London, he joined the post-war British art scene. His peers were figurative artists, Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon.

SIGNATURE STYLE

Souza’s work presented a raw, distorted and unruly world that, in many ways, reflected his own transgressive nature. In his own words, “Painting for me is not beautiful. It is as ugly as a reptile. I attack it.”

INFLUENCES

Cubism, Expressionism, Art Brut and other movements deeply impacted his work.

Art critic John Berger wrote that F N Souza’s art “…straddles several traditions but serves none.”

Slashing lines across drawings and paintings obsessively recur in his prismatic landscapes, nudes and paintings of Christ.

His visceral world reveals a whirlwind of catharsis, desire, aggression and tenderness.

In Souza’s world, the spiritual and the erotic dance gracefully as he confronts us with the intricacies of human consciousness and behaviour.

WORKSHOP SERIES

Goan artist Viraj Naik ran a series of workshops with schools and colleges and their Souza-inspired works are on display in the courtyard.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

This exhibition includes artwork from a private collection and is in partnership with Grosvenor Gallery, SaffronArt and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art.
