VINTAGE PANJIM

The exhibition, featuring over 300 images from the 1830s to 1987, documents the towns around the Mandovi River, focusing on Panjim over the years.

URBAN PLANNING

The 19th century plan for Panjim featured European-style urban planning with a rectangular grid layout, wide streets and open spaces. The city was planned keeping water bodies in mind.

MUNICIPALITY HQ

Built in 19th century, the Panjim municipal building, known as Camara Municipal de Pangim in Portuguese (where Kamat Hotel exists today), was the administrative headquarters of the municipal council of Panjim during the Portuguese days.

SYMBOL OF THE PAST

The bust of Antonio de Oliveira Salazar (the Portuguese dictator who ruled from 1932 to 1968) symbolised Goa’s past under Portuguese rule, and was demolished on Liberation Day. This picture was taken in 1957.

RIVER STORIES

The Mandovi River has been an important navigational route since time immemorial. This picture, taken in the 1930s, shows a sail boat, known as cotas. These wooden vessels, used in trade and transportation, showcased traditional maritime craftsmanship.

ELITE SPACE

The Palace of Earl's, built in 1889, was an important landmark during the Portuguese era. While the ornate building was a residence for Portuguese nobility in those days, Don Bosco High School now stands there.
