A rare July overflow for Goa's Mhaisal dam in 16 years

For the first time since 2009, the quiet Mhaisal Dam in Panchawadi in Ponda taluka, South Goa, is overflowing in the first week of July, thanks to an early monsoon and a surprisingly fast catchment fill-up.

IN RECORD TIME

According to official data, this is the earliest recorded overflow of the Mhaisal Dam since 2009, a clear sign of shifting monsoon patterns and fast-paced rainfall in Goa's hinterlands.

GREEN SERENITY

MODEST SCALE

Only three years ago, this dam was at 0.9 per cent capacity during summer. It's catchment area is just 4.1 sq km.

Mhaisal Dam’s early overflow ensures clean drinking and irrigation water for Shiroda and Panchawadi villages.

FOR PURE FLOW

This water treatment plant in Gawaliwada, which is two kilometres away from the dam, ensures clean water supply to the two villages in the area.
