Award-winning author Manu S Pillai graced the second day of the 13th edition of the Goa Arts & Literature Festival, where he discussed his latest book, Gods, Guns, and Missionaries.
Pillai was in conversation with Kaustubh Naik, curator, researcher and playwright who, during the sessions, dealt with various aspects of Pillai's book.
Having authored five books, Pillai's latest work is set in the colonial era, and explores the arrival of missionaries and the ensuing conversations, dialogues and discussions.
The author explained that the 'guns' in the book symbolise the arrival of Europeans and their rule, highlighting their bewilderment with Hinduism and its practices.
Pillai also explored the concept of Hinduism, reflecting on how it has been adopted, practiced and perceived over the years, as well as the changes and complexities with the arrival of Europeans.
During the early morning session, the Kerala-origin author attracted a diverse audience, including authors, writers, students, experts, teachers and enthusiasts.
The ongoing Goa Arts & Literature Festival at the International Centre Goa (ICG), Dona Paula, features book launches, discussions, seminars, and more, celebrating art and literature while providing a platform for creative exchange.
