FISHING IN THE FLOODPLAINS

Temporary ponds, canals and even paddy fields become unexpected fishing spots when it rains. It's a dance between nature's fury and its bounty.

LOVE FOR THE CATCH

From bustling fish markets to family kitchens, fresh fish is at the heart of Goan life. The coastal bounty brings people together over nustem (fish), celebrating tradition with every bite.

LINES, NETS AND TRADITION

Fishing isn’t merely an occupation. In Goa, it’s a way of life and a hobby that calls for grit and patience. It means untangling rain-soaked nets and waiting, sometimes for hours, for the gentle tug of a catch.

LOCAL BOUNTY

During this time of the year, families savour the taste of fresh fish like muddoshi (lady fish), poluye or poli (a type of catfish)  and xeetam (butterfish) — small in size, but packed with flavour.

MONSOON FAVOURITE

Sought after for its tender, flaky flesh and delicate flavour, kalundar (pearl-spot fish) shine in monsoon kitchens, whether simmered in curries or pan-fried to crisp perfection.

TAKE A BREAK

Even during the monsoon fishing ban, traditional fishermen with non-motorised boats carry on their occupation — keeping alive a slow, sustainable way of life while giving the sea a breather.
