MYTHICAL TALES

Mythology has it that Kelbai Devi, who is main deity of the village, descended to Goa from the Western Ghats along with her six sisters and one brother. Enamoured by its beauty, they decided to settle in different parts of Goa.

GODDESS WITH MANY NAMES

The goddess of Mulgao is worshipped in different avatars - Mahamaya, Mhammai and Kelbai. The 16th-century records of the Portuguese mention her as Qualba Devy, assumed to be Kelbai Devi.

JOIN THE PROCESSION

The best time to visit this temple is during the annual Pethechi Jatra in April, when the Kelbai deity is taken out in a procession from Mulgao to Mayem in a cane basket.

SPIRITUAL SYMBOLISM

In the precinct of the temple stands a magnificent architectural structure of Deepa Stambha or Deep Jyoti Stambha (oil lamp column) that is lit up with diyas during jatras and other auspicious occasions.

TAKE A HOLY DIP

The temple also houses a pond, which is used for taking a dip by the Dhonds - the devotees who take part in the jatra.

TEMPLE RUN

Kelbai temple can be easily accessed by road from the nearest town of Mapusa, about 23 km away. From the capital city of Panjim, it is about 25 km and 23 km from the Mopa airport.
