Fiery season's fiery blooms in Goa

These summer blooms thrive along riverbanks, and their name, 'Ashoka', aptly means 'without grief'.

THE WILD FIRE

This plant, resembling a tiger’s claw (locally known as Vag Chapko) is also called Agnishikha and Kalalavi. It is traditionally used to ease pregnancy pain.

PASSION BLOOM

Patkolni (Jungle geranium) grows in scrubby areas and bears small red edible fruits. While most have four petals, spotting a five-petaled one is considered lucky.

BLAZING GLORY  

The Palas tree, also known as the Flame of the Forest, stands out against the greenery. Its medicinal flowers hold cultural significance and contribute to ecological balance in tropical regions.

BUTTERFLY MAGNET

The striking Pagoda flowers adorn gardens and attract butterflies, including India’s second-largest, the Southern Birdwing.

ELUSIVE BEAUTY

Rumad is a wild species from the Ficus family. Although the Mussoll folk dance song of Chandor mentions Rumad flowers, spotting one is nearly impossible! However, the tree is adorned with red, mushy fruits.

DELICATE ABOLIM

Called the firecracker flower, Abolim is often seen in Goan markets, woven into garlands for temple offerings or adorning hair.

KOSAM

The Kosam tree’s red tender leaves stand out in summer. It holds cultural and medicinal value in Goa.

FIERY RED

Gulmohar holds cultural significance, symbolising summer’s arrival. Its fallen petals create a stunning floral carpet, making every passer-by pause to admire nature’s artistry.

PANGARO

Indian coral tree, known for its vibrant red coloured flowers, offers a feast for birds in the summer season.
