MAY MEMORIES

In Goa, every month arrives with its own adventures. The month of May, too, brings its own, ones that take Goans on a trip down memory lane and bring a smile to their faces.

TIME TO MEND

May in Goa was traditionally reserved for repairing terracotta roof tiles in preparation for the upcoming monsoons. The team effort to pass, clean and replace each tile was hard work; but it was fun, too.

SUN-KISSED AND DRY

With the fishing ban in place during the monsoon months in Goa, locals would prepare alternatives to fish, stringing sausages between chairs or drying fish along the roadside.

BEACH DAYS

With schools on a summer break, families planned overnight picnics by the beach. It was all about playing in the sand, enjoying seasonal drinks, and relishing delicious barbecues.

ROOTS REVISITED

Others returned to their ancestral homes in the village, where extended families and cousins got together for late night chats and laughter, which made summers in May truly unforgettable.

MANGO COLLECTION

May was also the time when mangoes were carefully plucked, stored in a corner of the house, and covered in hay to ripen, only to be relished the moment they turned golden yellow.

TRADITIONAL AFFAIR

May also came with a series of feasts, especially the Purument fests held in Panjim, Margao and Sanguem, where many shopped for a wide variety of local, culinary essentials.
