The 18th Exposition of the Sacred Relics of St Francis Xavier turns the spotlight on two churches – the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Sé Cathedral. While the former is famous, here’s a little about the latter.

HERITAGE SITE

The Sé Catedral de Santa Catarina, commonly known as Se Cathedral, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Churches and Convents of Goa located in Old Goa.

ANNUAL FEAST

The beautiful 16th century cathedral is the largest in Asia and is named after St Catherine of Alexandria, whose feast is celebrated on November 25 every year.

DATE OF COMPLETION

Construction on the church began in 1562, and it was completed around 90 years later.

STYLE NOTES

The exterior of the cathedral is built in the Tuscan style, whereas the interior exhibits the Corinthian style.

MIRACULOUS CROSS

The famous Cruz dos Milagres Chapel, also known as the Cross of Miracles, is located inside the cathedral.

ST FRANCIS XAVIER CONNECTION

Two statuettes, of St Francis Xavier and St Ignatius Loyola, are inset into the main pillars of the church.
