'Ghumot' cake and twinning villages mark ‘Matienchem Fest’ in Pilerne

Pilernekars celebrated their roots at the 2nd ‘Matienchem Fest’ on October 8, 2023 with an impressive showcase of local talent. Festakar Marius Fernandes marked his 80th fest and introduced an innovative concept that twinned the villagers of Pilerne and Carambolim together.

RETURN TO THE SOIL

On October 8, 2023, the courtyard of St John the Baptist Church, Pilerne, came to life with the lively beats, songs and cultural displays of Goa. The event showcased the village's pottery heritage, which once thrived in the area, as well as its arts, culture and food.

KNOW YOUR HERITAGE

Do you know what a bhorni or volli was used for during the olden days? A showcase of traditional items exhibited Goa’s heritage and links to the agrarian roots.

People from Jharkhand residing in Pilerne, Jharkhand All-Stars, presented a traditional dance performance during the pasoi, showcasing their rich culture, along with local Goan song and dances.

TWINNING SIMILARITIES

For the first time in Goa, the festival organised the twinning of Pilerne and Carambolim villages. Representatives from each village exchanged baskets showcasing their local specialties, and symbolically tied a ribbon to represent their shared connections and similarities.

LET THE MUSIC PLAY

The Ghumot Circle brought together local and Western music traditions to celebrate the love of music and Goa. Both, young and old, beat to the rhythm of popular Goan tunes, while the brass band and guitar added to the lively atmosphere.

THE GHUMOT THRIVES

The fest celebrated the 4th anniversary of the ghumot being recognised as the state instrument. During the event, the organisers cut and served a ghumot-shaped cake.

The display of locally available millets reminded us of their nutritional benefits and the importance of reintroducing them into our diet.
