Goa gets swinging to jazzy tunes

SOUL MUSIC

International Jazz Day (April 30) was an evening of soulful music at the Kala Academy, Panjim, with jazz band Ben Van Den Dungen Quartet and A R Rahman’s Sunshine Orchestra marking the day with two lilting ‘sets’.

SUNSHINE SPRINKLE

The event, organized by Goa Jazz Academy, was kicked off by the Sunshine Orchestra, a brass band from Chennai, that kept the audience rapt with its popular tunes like Caravan, Birdland and Skylark.

MUSICAL IMPRINTS

Dutch jazz saxophonist Ben Van Den Dungen, whose music has deep imprints of American jazz musician John Coltrane, set the tone for a musically uplifting evening.

WRAPPED IN MUSIC

Drummer Gijs Dijkhuizen alternated between playing with the band and solo, and tugged at the heartstrings each time.

STRUMMING PASSION

Bassist Marius Beets also drew applause from a delighted audience every time he passionately strummed his contrabass.

MAGICAL MUSIC

Conductor Lisa Sarasini flailed her arms in the air to extract soul-touching music from the Sunshine Orchestra.

MUSICAL STORIES

The evening belonged to maestro Ben Van Den Dungen in every way.  He narrated interesting anecdotes behind every tune rendered by the quartet.

IN THE MUSIC CAPSULE

The jazz quartet transported the audience into a capsule of time, filled with alluring tunes, as they played Wise One, Moment’s Notice, Angelica and other numbers.
