LENTEN EXPERIENCE

For Catholics, the penitential season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday each year. And, in Goa, the ‘Walking Pilgrimage’ is an important part of Lent.

WHEN IT STARTED

First held in 2019, this ‘Walking Pilgrimage’ has now become an annual Lenten event, bringing together the faithful from across the State.

THE BASICS

Organised by the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, this pilgrimage is also known as Bhavartachi Yatra, and is held on the first Sunday in Lent. This year, it was held on March 9, 2025.

RAISON D’ETRE

The walk is carried out in a spirit of penance, serving as a preparation for Lent. Thousands of devotees participate in it, with around 28,000 people joining this year.

PILGRIM ROUTE

The pilgrimage follows a 10 km route, starting at 2 am from designated centres and ending at Sancoale by 5 am. This year’s centres were Neura, Cansaulim, Bambolim, Verna and Vasco.

LENTEN SERVICE

At the facade of Our Lady of Good Health Church, Sancoale, there is the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, followed by a Eucharistic celebration.

WHY SANCOALE?

Sancoale holds a special significance for Goans as it is the place from where St Joseph Vaz, the patron saint of Goa, began his life of service to Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
