TRADITION-SOAKED SAO JOAO

A flood of rain dances and Sao Joao parties gushed through Goa on June 24, but there was none as traditional as the one in Aldona village.

ALDONA DOES IT BEST

Aldona's Naikawado, fervently, tries to retain tradition while celebrating this festival. Post 4 pm, practically the entire ward is dressed in Sao Joao attire and floral headgear - kopel.

SERENADING THE NEWLYWEDS

Weaving through the village's narrow bylanes, residents serenade the newlyweds with traditional Sao Joao songs, their joyful melodies reverberating from every house in the ward.

FESTIVITIES AT VILLAGE CORNER

After doing a round of the village, revellers halt at the chapel to recite prayers and then make their way to the well.

A FESTIVE PLUNGE

At the well, the biggest kopel is thrown in first and then the newlyweds plunge into it as celebratory whoops fill the air.
