NATURE’S CRIMSON GIFT

Bixa orellana, or Achiote, is a small yet remarkable tree found around the world. It is best known for its vibrant orange-red condiment called 'annatto'.

MONSOON BLOSSOMS, SUMMER MAGIC

Delicate pink blooms grace the tree from June to November. But even beyond the monsoon months, annatto proves its worth, especially during the summer.

RATTLING PODS OF COLOUR

Soon after the flowers fade, spiky pods begin to form. By January, they mature and start rattling, ready to burst open and reveal the colour hidden within.

SACRED AND SYMBOLIC

The split pods reveal vermilion, waxy arils covering the seeds, earning it names like keshari in Goa, and sindoor in the rest of India, where it is considered auspicious for married women.

LIPSTICK TREE

Famous as the 'lipstick tree', its pigment is used in cosmetics. For centuries, tribes, including those in Brazil, used it to adorn their skin, hair, and ceremonial gear.
