TIE A YELLOW RIBBON

We may not have oak trees in Goa, but Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree, that 1973 hit by Tony Orlando and Dawn, brings to mind the many rain trees (Samanea saman) seen around the state, and which have a canopy which is as wide as, if not wider than, an oak.

GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME

As you listen to the 1965-chart topping Green Green Grass of Home, you wonder if the Welsh singer, Tom Jones, was referring to Goa’s carpets of green fields during the monsoons, which are a sight to behold.

Eye of the Tiger, by rock band, Survivor, which was the theme song of the 1982 film Rocky III gets us thinking about Goa’s tigers, a subject that springs up every so often in the local news scene.

Nancy Sinatra’s 1966 Billboard No 1, These Boots are Made for Walking, certainly reminds us about the gum boots which were the footwear of choice among school kids long before today’s uber chic rain shoes became a seasonal trend in Goa.
