POTEKARS ARE BACK

In Goa, around the Carnival time, a unique festival, known as Potekar, is celebrated on the quaint island of Divar, located just a few kilometres from Panjim.

JINGLE BELLS

That, sadly, won't remind you of Christmas time! Potekars tie cowbells around their waists and ankles to make their presence felt long before you see them.

DRESSED TO KILL

Apart from the bells, Potekars (they are actually residents of the island) don spooky costumes, including eerie masks, and sometimes change their mannerisms to get into the character.

AGE-OLD TRADITION

The festival has roots that go back to the Portuguese-era, although the reasons for it remain unclear.

NIGHTMARE FOR KIDS

During the three days of festivities, Potekars wander around the island scaring little children as well as the fainthearted.

THRILL OR CHILL?

Along with the Carnival celebrations, this festival brings in the cheer and fun that charms many from near and far.

AT YOUR OWN RISK

The festival takes place three days before Ash Wednesday and if you want to experience it, head to the ferry leading you to Divar.
