A hallmark of traditional Goan architecture, these windows are made from oyster shells set into brightly coloured wooden frames, and cast a soft, diffused glow indoors.

WHERE TO FIND THEM

These windows are particularly prevalent in houses in Bardez, Tiswadi, and Salcete talukas, the first conquests of the Portuguese in Goa.

DETAILS & DESIGN

Typically adorned with arched frames and intricate designs at the top, these shell windows are both elegant and functional — allowing light and air to filter in, while ensuring privacy.

OUT OF STOCK

Due to overharvesting, the windowpane oyster — a bivalve marine mollusk from the Placunidae family — has become endangered and is now protected under the Wildlife Protection Act.

PRICELESS HERITAGE

While some of these windows can be still be seen in crumbling old homes, many Goans are beginning to appreciate their heritage value — especially now that oyster shell harvesting is banned.

A PIECE OF THE PAST

Several local stores offer miniature replicas of these iconic windows (in the form of magnets, coasters etc), making for unique and meaningful souvenirs of one’s visit to Goa.
