One of Goa's architectural heritage crumbles in silence

LYING IN NEGLECT

The 18th century church and convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Nossa Senhora do Carmo) in Chimbel, which is situated at a distance of around 6 km from Panjim, is an example of a neglected heritage site.

SYMBOL OF RESILIENCE

Going back into history, this historical site even housed a psychiatric hospital, known as Asilo de Alienados (Asylum for the mentally ill).

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Chimbel Carmelites were one of the firsts indigenous Carmelite congregations in entire Asia.

ARCHITECTURAL SPLENDOUR

The current state of the church captures the essence of both neglect and enduring beauty. Its façade remains a striking testament to Goan artisans' skills seen in its intricate flower motifs and graceful arches.

CURRENT STATE

Locals, heritage and members of the Mount Carmel Conservation Association of Chimbel (MCCAC) are working tirelessly to safeguard this invaluable heritage site.

NEED FOR ACTION

The ruins call for collaborative efforts between the Goa government and passionate individuals to revive this fading heritage.

DIVINE INTERVENTION

On May 30, the ruins hosted an Eucharistic celebration to mark the feast of the church, which is traditionally celebrated in July.

GOD THE ALMIGHTY

This year, the feast mass was held in advance due to the inconvenience caused by the monsoon rains to hold the service in July every year.
