Say yes to fire safety — Goa issues SOPs

The Goa Forest Department recently published a series of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aimed at preventing and managing fires that may occur during the ongoing festivities.

1. NO BURNING

The act of burning anything such as debris or disposal of lit cigarettes, agarbattis that could cause a forest fire is against the law and will be punishable under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

2. KNOW THE DANGER

According to the SOPs, it is important to be cautious during dry and summer conditions to avoid any issues that could cause sparks and fire while operating chainsaws or welding equipment.

3. NO SMOKING

In addition, smoking is not allowed in areas with trees, and it is important to make sure that cigarette butts are disposed of correctly in designated containers.

4. BE CAUTIOUS

When operating or parking vehicles, it is advisable to steer clear of regions with tall grass or dried plants, as the heat from the exhaust systems can potentially start fires.

5. PROPER WASTE DISPOSAL

The act of throwing away waste, particularly glass bottles or mirrors, which have the potential to concentrate or direct sunlight and cause fires, is not allowed. Anyone found guilty of dumping waste in forested areas will be subject to legal penalties.

6. BE WATCHFUL

The community and authorities must work together to address the potential risks of forest fires, and it is important for the public to report any suspicious activity that could result in intentional or accidental fires.
