FONTE PHOENIX

Begin your walk at Fonte Phoenix spring, built around 1855, which still has waters that run cold and thigh-deep.

MARUTI TEMPLE

Walk up to see this temple, built into the side of Altinho in 1934, and dedicated to Hanuman, also known as Maruti.

PEACOCK STAIRS

As you continue deeper into the quarter, you’ll see ‘The Stairway of Loose Stones’ to your left, named after the laterite stones it was composed of, repainted with a peacock mural a few years ago.

SHRI VITTHAL RAKHUMAI MANDIR

On Rua Armada Portuguesa, not far from the Ourem Creek, you’ll spot the multi-coloured façade of this temple.

GITANJALI GALLERY

Pop into this modest art gallery to see works by locals and some international artists for sale.

PANJIM INN

Across from the gallery is this 24-bedroom heritage hotel, set squarely in the middle of Fontainhas with The Verandah restaurant, where you can pause for a drink or meal.

GOA VELHA GALLERIA

Next to it is the galleria which specializes in traditional, hand-painted Azulejos and ceramics.

ST SEBASTIAN CHAPEL

As you continue walking deeper into Fontainhas, you’ll see this chapel to your left. Built in 1887, it has a stunning, white-washed façade.

WELL

To the right of the chapel you’ll find a large well that’s still in use. Throw in a coin and make a wish.

ESCADINHAS IVENS

In the corner behind the well are rainbow-hued stairs, with 170 steps, named after the Portuguese explorer Roberto Ivens. Continue rambling among the streets until you find a café or restaurant that takes your fancy.
