Vernal equinox puts on a fleeting light show at Holy Spirit Church in Goa

Every year at sunset on March 21, a unique astronomical phenomenon, known as the spring or vernal equinox, takes centre stage at the Holy Spirit Church in Goa.

The over 400-year-old Holy Spirit Church in Margao, Goa, is designed to witness this rare magical spring equinox.

The rays of the sunlight enter the church through the oculus on the façade of the church.

The sunlight then lights up the Holy Spirit emblem.

And, both the statues on either side of the altar of Jesus and Mary are illuminated.

Equinox marks the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere.

Equinox in Latin means equal day and equal night -- 12 hrs each.
