In Goa, a bamboo winnowing tray, called soop/sup in Konkani, is used to separate rice grain from husk.

Winnowing involves tossing the grain into the air.

During this process, the chaff, being light, gets blown away by the wind, while the grain, being heavy, falls to the ground.

In the good old days, farmers would rely on the wind to help them with the winnowing process. But nowadays, fans are utilised to accelerate and ease the process.

Finally, after weeks of winnowing and drying, the grain is packed in sacks, and will eventually be sold, stored, parboiled etc.
