What makes the celebrations on August 15 unique in Goa?

A BIG DAY

August 15 is an important day in the history of India. And, while the whole country celebrates Independence Day, the celebrations are even bigger in Goa.

TWO OCCASIONS, ONE DAY

On this day, Goa celebrates not just India’s Independence Day, but also the feast of the Assumption.

CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE

Various events such as flag hoisting, Har Ghar Tiranga etc mark the Independence Day celebrations in Goa.

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION

The Assumption is one of the biggest feasts of the Catholic community, and is celebrated in all churches of Goa on August 15 annually.

BEHIND THE FESTIVITIES

The feast marks the assumption of the mother of Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, into Heaven at the end of her earthly life.

TRADITIONAL DELICACY

Patoleos are the special festive dish that Goa’s Catholics prepare on the occasion of the feast of the Assumption. This delicacy is made from rice flour, palm jaggery, coconut and turmeric leaves.

VILLAGE FEAST

The festivities are held in a big way in some parishes of Goa, especially Our Lady of Assumption Church, Velsao, and Our Lady of Good Hope Church, in Candolim.
