Why Goa and Goans loved the hippies

CHOOSE YOUR FREEDOM

In Goa, there's freedom to be yourself. One can let his or her hair down and be like a hippie. And that's precisely the reason hippies came here in the early 70s, got enchanted by this land and told the world about it, paving the way for tourism.

LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST

The hippies were a tribe with a laid-back lifestyle far away from their disillusioned lifestyle in America and Europe and Goans loved them for many reasons. Here are some of them:

THEY COEXISTED

For the hippies life was never a race, but living in peace; and they believed harmony was the key to peaceful coexistence with locals.

UNFORGETTABLE HIPPY

Among the well-known hippies was Goa Gil, aka Gilbert Levey, the pioneer of psytrance, who rocked all the rave parties in the 70s and 90s. He died in October 2023 after battling cancer at the age of 72.

One of the legacies left behind by the hippies are the hippie markets in North Goa which are a hit with domestic tourists.
