Will Goa's livestock census help reduce stray dog bites on beaches?

The 21st National Livestock Census, launched by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AHVS), throws light on Goa's stray dog population.

DATA DRIVE

The 4-month ongoing countrywide census, in which Goa too is included, continues gathering crucial data on the State's animals to strategise future welfare and health programmes.

STRAY STATISTICS

The census, which started in November 2024 and ends next month, has counted over 56,000 stray dogs so far in Goa, according to media reports.

CANINE CONCERNS

Stray dog bites have raised concerns for tourists in Goa. The ongoing census is believed to be the State's effort to tackle this menace on Goa's beaches.

FOR CATTLE CONTROL

Livestock census is conducted every five years in the country to create an accurate inventory of livestock such as cattle, buffalo, goats, pigs, poultry etc.

KINDNESS COUNTS

At the heart of the census is animal welfare. The data gathered will support vaccination campaigns, livestock health, disease management and also preservation of endangered breeds.

POPULATION COUNT

The census is being carried out in 627 village and urban wards through 115 enumerators, 31 supervisors and 2 nodal officers using digital data collection methods.
