FAIR & LOVELY

If there’s one thing that every Goan loves about church fairs and temple zatras in Goa, it is the stall selling gram and groundnuts.

HOT STUFF

A popular and delicious snack, gram and groundnuts are sold freshly-roasted and piping hot at the stalls.

HOW IT’S MADE

The gram and groundnuts are typically roasted very close to the stall, and it is quite fascinating to watch the process.

PAPER TO PLASTIC

While these nuts were traditionally packaged in paper cones, these days they are increasingly sold in plastic bags.

MEASURE IT

Most vendors can still be seen using a traditional wooden, square-shaped measuring cup known as podd.

GO NUTS

Roasting the nuts gives them a delicious, nutty aroma. For the uninitiated, the crisp brown, outer peel is discarded, while the crunchy inside is eaten.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Similar to khajem, this traditional occupation has been passed down through generations by many vendors.
