This Friday, December 8, Flying Goat Café in Anjuna as part of its Jazz Odyssey series, a monthly Friday Night Jazz Special, is hosting highly acclaimed German jazz musicians who are traversing the boundaries between jazz and Indian classical music.

The Friday Night Jazz Special is a platform that exposes the local scene to top-tier jazz artists from around the country and the world, and the four -- Hindol Deb (sitar and compositions), Jens Düppe (drums), Christian Ramond (double bass) and Clemens Orth (piano) -- promise to captivate the audiences with their innovative fusion of jazz and Indian classical music.

The event will feature the critically acclaimed album Essence of Duality by Hindol Deb. Essence of Duality traverses the boundaries between jazz and Indian classical music and makes aesthetic connections between the two. With sitar as the featured instrument, Hindol’s formal studies in jazz coupled with Indian classical music background inspired him to explore a new style of composing while striving to keep the two genres at eye level.

"I started looking at the ragas from a Western perspective, trying to discover twists and modulations in ragas and how to use tension and relaxation from a harmonic standpoint," explains Hindol Deb.

He further added, "This led me to discover the harmonic structures in Indian modes and experiment with tonal shifts, completely altering the raga or even playing the same raga while changing the tonal centre. Poly-rhythmic structures are a central aspect of Indian classical music that I consciously wanted to incorporate into my compositions. Desert Clouds and Essence of Duality are two such compositions where you can hear the rhythm section playing a different rhythm".

Clemens Orth, a virtuoso jazz pianist with New York jazz background and an arranger, colours the compositions with interesting harmonies. Jens Düppe on drums and Christian Ramond on contra bass, both highly acclaimed musicians, give a strong rhythmic stability enabling a complex rhythmic exchange.

The compositions have polyrhythmic structures and modes while using the language of jazz in the instrumentation, harmonisation and improvisation. Though one can’t directly assign the music as European or Indian because of a new compositional style, one can still identify with the music and enjoy thoroughly.
