MARGAO: Taps in Margao and surrounding areas went dry due to failure of power supply to the Salaulim water treatment plant on Tuesday. The power supply to the Salaulim water treatment plant was affected due to sudden fault in the Sheldem-Xelpem feeder caused by unseasonal rain and thunderstorm on Monday night. As a result there was no water supply to parts of Sanguem, Quepem, Salcete and Mormugao talukas for more than 20 hours. The power supply to Salaulim water treatment plant was restored at 2 pm on Tuesday, according to Public Works Department (water supply) executive engineer Shrikant Gaonkar.  "At an initial stage they failed to identify fault of failure of power supply at the Sheldem-Xelpem feeder. It took almost 17 hours to repair the fault. But soon after the restoration of the power supply, the pump at Salaulim commenced and we released the water. Water supply will reach all the areas by Tuesday evening," informed Gaonkar. On Monday night at around 9 pm, feeder of Sheldem-Xelpem noticed major fault due to unseasonal rain and thunderstorm. Soon after the power failure Salaulim water treatment plant stopped functioning and as a result water supply was interrupted for more than 20 hours. The waters taps of Sanguem, Quepem, Salcete and Mormugao talukas went dry and people faced hardships.  Also few places in Sanguem and Quepem remained in dark for many hours on Monday night. Meanwhile, Fire and Emergency Services, Margao had to attend to cases of fallen trees in many parts of Salcete taluka. "We have reported some tree falling cases in Benaulim, Cuncolim and other places.
