PANAJI: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Goa will host a workshop on the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) initiative “Virtual Labs” - An e-learning platform for practical laboratory experiments - “Quality Education for Everyone” - Mission NIT Goa at its campus on Thursday, January 23.
The workshop will be coordinated by Dr Damodar Reddy and Dr Mini, faculty of Computer Science and Engineering, NIT Goa.
As a growing Institution, NIT Goa constantly strives to update to latest software and hardware technologies. In addition to the resources provided to the students such as NPTEL, GIAN MOOCs courses etc the institute is also a nodal centre of Virtual Labs to enhance the practical skills of the students.
Virtual Labs, an initiative by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology, is an e-learning platform for practical laboratory experiments on the same lines of NPTEL for classroom courses and aims at facilitating learning of engineering and sciences through experimentation in a virtual environment at the preferred pace, place and period (time) of the learner.
NITK Surathkal, associated with the mission of ICT aided experimental learning as one among the 12 participating institutes across the country, is engaged in the development, maintenance and outreach of the online resources under the Virtual Labs project on behalf of MHRD. Serving as a nodal centre of Virtual Labs NITK Surathkal, NIT Goa will open new avenues of experiential learning to the students and faculty members of the institution and the region as a whole.
The main objective of this initiative is that students and faculty of NIT Goa will have an opportunity to learn and get trained on ICT aided experimental learning. The proposed virtual labs would cater to serve the experimental needs of the undergraduate, post graduate and PhD students of NIT Goa. The student’s fraternity of NIT Goa will be able to learn the remote experimentations of the state-of-the-art concepts with the help of the virtual laboratory setup. Further, the faculty and students of NIT Goa will acquire virtual access to latest software’s and sophisticated hardware.
Following the collaboration with NIT Surathkal, the students and faculty of NIT Goa in due course may also be trained at NITK Surathkal campus and undertake internship projects under Virtual Labs. NIT Goa will also have the opportunity to take up initiatives to contribute to the Virtual Labs project through pedagogy design, lab development, student internships jointly with NITK Surathkal, and may also take up workshops and other innovative initiatives and activities to spread the awareness about Virtual Labs to a larger audience internally and the rest of Goa.
Director of NIT Goa, Dr Gopal Mugeraya said that NIT Goa and NITK Surathkal proposes to have a collaboration with National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa in projects related to design and development of mini, portable and cost effective under water/remotely operated marine vehicles, under water communications, wireless communications etc.
