5 Goans named in India’s squad for SAFF championship

Seriton Fernandes, Mandar Rao Dessai, Brandon Fernandes, Glan Martins and Liston Colaco will play for India in the SAFF Trophy.

India's 23-member squad for the SAFF Championship feature five plavers from Goa. Head Coach Igor Stemak announced the 23-members squad for the upcoming tournament on Sunday.


Defenders Seriton Fernandes, Mandar Rao Dessai, midfielders Brandon Fernandes, Glan Martins and Liston Colaco will represent India in the SAFF Trophy. All five players were also in the Indian squad for the two friendly internationals against Nepal.

The Indian team will gather in Bangalore on Monday, September 27 and leave for the Maldives on Tuesday, according to the All India Football Federation. The tournament will kick off in the Maldives on October 1, 2021.

Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldives are the other teams in the tournament. The Indian team has won the tournament seven times.

These include competitions in 1993 (Lahore), 1997 (Kathmandu), 1999 (Margao), 2005 (Karachi), 2009 (Dhaka), 2011 (New Delhi), 2015-16 (Thiruvananthapuram).In this year's tournament, India will play against Bangladesh on October 4, Sri Lanka on October 7, Nepal on October 10 and Maldives on October 13.

GOALKEEPERS: Gurpreet Singh, Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem, Vishal Kaith.

DEFENDERS: Pritam Kotal, Seriton Fernandes, Chinglensana Singh, Rahul Bheke, Subhasish Bose, Mandar Rao Dessai.

MIDFIELDERS: Udanta Singh, Brandon Fernandes, Lalengmawia, Anirudh Thapa, Sahal Abdul Samad, Jeakson Singh, Glan Martins, Suresh Singh, Liston Colaco, Yasir Mohammad.

FORWARDS: Manvir Singh, Rahim Ali, Sunil Chhetri, Farukh Choudhary.
