Teenage surfer Sugar Shanti Banarse from Goa has bagged a silver medal in the women’s open category at the Indian National Surf and SUP Championship 2021, held in Kovalam, Tamil Nadu.

The 15-year-old from Alto Porvorim finished in second place after beating many experienced surfers in the tournament.

“This is a wonderful experience and now I am thinking of my next competition. Now I will give more time to surfing and try to get more girls in the sport, " Sugar said after the competition.

Sugar’s coach Edy Rodrigues has been running a Surfing school at Morjim where Sugar received training. “Right now, our school currently has more than thirty young trainees. I am mentoring trainees under 16 years of age. There are also facilities for older trainees, "Rodriguez said.”

In the open category of the national competition, Shrishti Selvam of Tamil Nadu won the women's title, while D.S. Manikandan won the men's title.

In the past, the competition had 200 surfers and various categories like U-17 and the idea was to encourage people to come out and surf.

Surfing also made its much-awaited debut at the Tokyo Summer Olympics 2020.
