MAPUSA: Dempo SC played out a 2-2 draw against Calangute Association in the Goa Professional League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Monday.Domnic Fernandes scored a brace for Calangute while Rajat Harijan and Edwin Viegas netted one each for Dempo.
It was Dempo’s second consecutive draw after being held 1-1 by defending champions FC Goa in their previous encounter. While Calangute had suffered a 0-1 defeat to Corps of Signals.Both the teams were looking to get an early edge. In the 13th minute, Niraj swung in a corner towards Yogesh Kadam, who headed it back towards goal and found Albert Gonsalves but his header was cleared on at goalline by Gaurav Vaigankar.
In the 20th minute, Calangute’s Valerio Rodrigues played the ball towards Domnic, who slotted it past Luis Barreto with a neat placement.Seven minutes later, Dempo made a comeback after both the U-20 players combined well to make it 1-1. Niraj Parekh crossed the ball and Rajat headed it in.
In the 40th minute, Niraj showed some great footwork just outside the box and took a shot which missed the target narrowly.Soon, Calangute’s Gaurav sent in a low cross towards Valerio who flicked it into the path of Domnic, whose strike kissed the crossbar and went over.
Just before going into the break, Malik Mulla was brought down by Alber Gonsalves. Domnic stepped up and converted from the spot to secure his brace and make it 2-1.After resuming, Dempo’s Velito Cruz took a shot which was saved by Sanij Bugde. Minutes later, Dempo coach Samir Naik brought on Beevan D’Mello in place of Rajat to create some creative moves.
In the 59th minute, Alber sent in a cross towards Beevan, whose header was denied by Sanij.The Golden Eagles tried hard to regroup and surge for an equaliser as their chances being intercepted or shots missing the target. In additional time, Edwin saved the day for his side and made it 2-2.
