Panaji: The FC Goa team which recently became the first club from India to secure a place in the group stage of the AFC Champions League was on Sunday felicitated for their achievement by MLA Vijay Sardesai.
After winning the Super Cup last season, the Gaurs met with success again in the current campaign. The club’s first ever five-game winning streak helped them amass 39 points (another club record) from their 18 games, helping them secure the top spot in the league.
The event at Samba Square, on the sidelines of The Big Fat Fatorda Carnival Blast, 2020 in Fatorda saw FC Goa President and co-owner, Akshay Tandon, along with all members of the FC Goa squad and coaches invited on the stage and personally congratulated by Vijay Sardesai on their landmark achievement.
Speaking on the occasion, FC Goa President, Akshay Tandon said, “I feel humbled that FC Goa has been felicitated at the event today. In six years, the club has always felt the love of the people in this state. And it is this love that pushes us every day.
"To become the first team to represent India at the AFC Champions League, I believe is a moment that every Goan can cherish. I firmly believe that the team will make a great representation of Goan and Indian football in Asia’s premier competition next season.”
Vijay Sardesai remarked, “Today we are delighted to welcome FC Goa back to their home turf and our home, Fatorda. It is a proud moment for us Goemkars. We congratulate the Gaurs on becoming the first Indian team to qualify for the AFC Champions League by topping the Indian Super League. "
