First printing press in Asia

Printing operations began in Goa in 1556. The first printing press was established at the Jesuit Saint Paul's College in Old Goa, which resulted in the publication of Conclusiones Philosophicas.

The body of St Francis Xavier

St Francis Xavier's body was initially transported to Goa in the 16th century in a lime slaking, from which the body miraculously emerged without getting decomposed. His body is still kept inside a glass case in the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa.

India's only state with a Uniform Civil Code

Goa is the only state in India that follows a Uniform Civil Code so far. All religions and sects, including Hindus, Muslims, and Christians, are subject to the same laws when it comes to marriage, divorce, succession, and other such matters.

Home to 480 species of birds

If you are an avid bird-watcher, Goa is among one of the ideal destinations. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in Chorao in Tiswadi, and the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary in South Goa are the places to spot some rare and migratory birds.

Celebrates two independence days

India attained freedom from British rule on 15th August, 1947, but the Portuguese continued to rule Goa. After 14 years, Indian forces invaded Goa on 17th December, 1961. Goa officially became part of India on 19th December, 1961, ending 450 years of Portuguese rule.

Smallest state with highest per capita income

Goa is the smallest state in India spread over an area of 3,702 sq km and has a coastline that stretches for 105 kms. The coastal state is one of the wealthiest states with the highest per capita income.
