At this exhibition in Goa, denim is a canvas of embroidered tales

NEW LIFE FOR OLD JEANS

Thanks to the creativity of artist and novelist, Savia Viegas, and her mother, Berta, discarded jeans are finding a fresh purpose at an exhibition titled, 'Carmona’s Talking Quilt', currently on at Museum of Goa (MOG), Pilerne.

A STITCH IN TIME

Berta, a skilled embroidery artisan, had crystallised motifs from her time, and embroidered them onto the hardy denim fabric in 2007.

GOAN VILLAGE LIFE IN FOCUS

The narrative of a Goan village unfolds through these upcycled denims, embroideries and paintings, fashioned from collages.

STORIES IN DENIM

Savia found this large quilt when she was sorting through her belongings. The exhibition, at Pilerne, revolves around the display of this mounted quilt and 10 panels of hand-embroidered narratives, which tell a story.

HOW IT'S MADE

Savia's mother had cut an assortment of jeans into a uniform size around motifs that narrated stories; and these embroideries were crocheted together with a joining border in 2023.

TALES FROM THE PAST

These motifs were images which spoke of the stories Savia remembered from her childhood, and are divided into stories of the Rose, Lovely Unloved, Three Eddis, Biloo and me and Romeo and Juliet.
