The 11th edition of a cultural and heritage walk at Mauxi village, in Sattari taluka, was recently hosted by environmentalist, researcher and writer, Rajendra Kerkar. The region is noted for its ancient rock art.

AROUND THE VILLAGE

The walk began in the vicinity of Ravalnath Temple, with Kerkar sharing details about the village, the temple and the flora and fauna of the area. Rock art can be seen around this temple on the banks of the River Zarme.

IF ROCKS COULD TALK

On this basalt rock, there is a variety of art featuring bulls, antelopes and other animals. It was first discovered by locals around 20 years ago.

THEMES & TECHNIQUES

The rock art, is believed to belong to the Neolithic Period, and has been created using the bruising technique. In this picture, the rock art depicts a bull-fighting scene.

WHAT A WASTE

A glimpse of the Zarme riverbed, where this rock art is found, reveals plastic waste strewn about callously, a sign that the location is in a state of neglect.

ANCIENT CULTURE

This rock with 31 cupules (circular cavities on a rock) is worshipped outside the Puravati Temple. Kerkar informed that, in many cultures, such rocks are worshipped, which suggests that this is a place rich in ancient history and civilisation.

SEASONAL DELIGHTS

The last stop of the walk involved relishing local delicacies such as this phansachi bhaji, or jackfruit vegetable, which is a seasonal dish.
