During Shigmo, the tribal community of Barcaim, Canacona, presents one of the most intriguing folk dances, tonyamell, which bears resemblance to the dandiya dance performed in Gujarat.

Tonyamell, being one of the oldest folk dances, it is performed by villagers of Barcaim with great fervour and devotion.

WHAT'S TONYAMELL?

Tonyamell basically refers to tonyo or toni which means sticks, and mell which means a troupe of dancers.

STICKING TO TRADITION

Tonyamell differs from dandiya in various aspects. Armed with sticks, only male members take part in this dance, which begins slow and gradually attains a feverish pitch.

SHOWING REVERENCE

The sticks, known as tonyo or toni, are treated with great reverence. The dancers ensure that the sticks are never left on the ground or allowed to touch anyone's feet. Also, they show their respect by removing their footwear before handling the sticks.

DANCE FEVER

Dancers perform tonyamell for four consecutive days, wearing colourful attire and ornate headgears adorned with amboli flowers. They dance barefoot, with gungroo tied around their feet.

TO THE BEATS

The dance is performed to the beats of musical instruments such as ghumat, shamel, tashe, cymbals, and gongs.

HOUSE-TO-HOUSE

The dance performance commences with a ritualistic tribute to the deity. Individuals, hailing from different wards of Barcaim, go house to house showcasing their dance skills throughout the four-day celebration of Shigmo.
