Goa is dotted with churches, most of which were built centuries ago. Here are a few which are worth checking out for their history, design and more.

PANJIM CHURCH

First up on the list is Panjim’s Church of the Immaculate Conception (Igreja da Imaculada Conceição). Arguably one of the most recognisable churches in Goa, this church started out as a chapel built in the 1500s.

SALVADOR DO MUNDO CHURCH

Constructed in 1565, the Saviour of the World Church, in Salvador do Mundo, is one of the oldest churches in Bardez, and exhibits a Mannerist Neo-Roman style façade.

ALDONA CHURCH

While the church in Aldona is called St Thomas the Apostle Church (Sao Tome Igreja em Aldona in Portuguese), the original Aldona church came into being in the year 1569.

MAPUSA CHURCH

The magnificent St Jerome Church, Mapusa (Sao Jeronimo Igreja em Mapusa in Portuguese) was founded in 1594.

TALEIGAO CHURCH

One of the oldest churches in Goa, the Church of St Michael the Archangel, in Taleigao, is also the first parish to celebrate the annual harvest feast in Tiswadi.

PENHA DE FRANCA CHURCH

Founded in the 17th century, the majestic Church of Our Lady of Penha de França (Nossa Senhora de Penha de Franca) overlooks the River Mandovi.
