Eco Treks Goa organised a trek to Dhamapur lake in Maharashtra on Sunday, March 10, 2024, giving 35 participants a chance to explore and admire the diverse ecosystem of this site near Malwan.

RECOGNISED

This man-made lake, built in 1530, provides water to fields and neighbouring towns. In recognition of its historical significance, it was honoured with the World Heritage Irrigation Structure Award 2020.

BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOT

The reserved forest around the lake is a biodiversity hotspot, with more than 190 floral, 200 bird, 52 butterfly and 8 mammal species, according to the Dhamapur-based Syamantak Trust.

ON A ROLE

Mohammad Sheikh, from the Syamantak Trust, discussed termite mounds as a significant aspect of the forest that greatly contribute to the process of decomposition.

BOATING & BIRDS

The Eco Treks excursion included a unique activity called 'Poy boating' on the lake's backwaters, providing a fantastic chance to discover a diverse range of bird species.

TEMPLE STOP

The participants also had the opportunity to explore the Bhagwati temple and learn about its distinctive architecture next to the scenic view of the lake.

TRADITIONAL FLAVOURS

After the forest walk and boating experience, it was time to relish a traditional meal, made from local ingredients such as red rice, chako (baby jackfruit), fajaav (local beans), etc.

GRANDMA CALLS

The final stop of the trek included a stop at this eco store, run by Rohit Azgaonkar selling his grandmother’s recipes like kulit laddoo, kokum butter, Indian bael fruit juice, pickles and an innovative jackfruit ice cream.
