SOMBRE SIGNIFICANCE

On Good Friday, no church bells ring, and even within Goan homes the talking between family members is in whispered tones. And, if one takes a walk through villages, one can experience a sombre atmosphere.

A HUMBLE MEAL

While some fast, others find satisfaction in a bowl of kanji (a simple rice gruel), paired with a basic pickle or a slice of raw mango. The lack of meat or fish serves as a reminder of the sacrifice.

WOODEN RATTLE

In the absence of church bells, the most dominant sound is of the wooden rattles. Besides the rattle sounds, sorrowful hymns, known as motets, fill the churches, evoking strong emotions.
