HC notice to Goa's Calangute MLA in tree hacking incident

The High Court of Bombay at Goa has stated that the tree cutting incident in Siolim appears to be planned and issued notices to Calangute MLA Michael Lobo and the Panchayat Secretary of Siolim-Marna village panchayat.

Residents of Siolim had bitterly protested the hacking of trees by holding candle light vigils.

BITTER PROTEST

The cutting of century-old trees, close to the Siolim tinto, began in the first week of March. Initially, a small number expressed their dissent, but after realising the extent of the damage, more people joined in the protest.

NOT FOR GOANS

Siolim residents have alleged that the cutting of trees for road expansion is being carried out to favor the builders' lobby from outside Goa.

The reckless cutting of trees for road development projects indicates a lot about the government's dedication, or rather the lack thereof, to protect Goa's natural resources.
