GOAN GOLD

Mangoes, known as the king of fruits, have always been a crowd favourite, and among them the Mankurad holds a special place in Goa. At the start of the mango season, this variety fetches thousands of rupees.

TROPICAL TANG

While ripe mangoes steal the show, raw mangoes have their own fan base. They’re ideal for pickles, preserves, or enjoyed with Goa's seasonal spirit, urrak, with a dash of salt, and chili for a tangy taste.

CASHEW CRUNCH

Another seasonal delight is the fresh tender cashew nut, known as bibbe. Carefully plucked and peeled, these are a treat. Their freshness and softness make them a joy to eat raw.

PURE PURPLE

Widely found in Goan villages, the purple-coloured Jambhalam or Zambllam with their sweet, yet mildly sour and astringent taste, are good for those suffering from diabetes.

FOR THAT TWIST

Kokum or Binnddam is another quintessential summer fruit, though it is more commonly used in cooking than eaten raw. With its tangy flavour, its dried outer peel is used as a souring agent in curries, often serving as a substitute for tamarind.

JUICY BURST

Another delightful summer treat in Goa is the locally grown love apple or jaam. These bell-shaped fruits grow in bunches, varying in colour from light green to pinkish-red. They are even used to make homemade wine.

HEAT BUSTER

Watermelons remain the undisputed summer essential. Many locals grow them in their fields and sell them along highways or in local markets. These are a must-have to combat Goa’s sweltering heat.

BERRY BLISS

One cannot miss the rapidly disappearing wild berries like chunna and kantam (Carissa carandas). These unique seasonal fruits are a must-try, whether you’re shopping at local markets or passing by roadside vendors.
