WHERE MAGIC UNFOLDS

Flatidae (the family) is found worldwide, but their nymphs are seen in tropical regions. The Western Ghats are especially rich in planthopper diversity.

CLINGING TO LIFE

They are usually seen on plant stems and leaves, often in clusters, feeding on plant sap using their piercing-sucking mouthparts.

A QUIET BEGINNING

Planthoppers lay eggs in batches, often on the leaves or stems of their host plants.

WHITE FOREST

In the wild Chorla Ghat on Goa's border, an entire forest stretch turns white with the presence of these unique creatures. Trees, twigs, and even the ground wear a soft white cloak as if winter has arrived in the tropics.

FLUFFY FAIRIES

Their fluffy, waxy threads resemble cotton or silk, making them look just like their name, nymphs. Like tiny forest fairies, they’re often mistaken for fungi, fluff, or flowers.

THEIR DEFENCE CLOAK

These threads are secreted by the nymphs for protection against predators and water. Some scientists say these filaments break off easily, helping the insect escape danger.

JOURNEY TO ADULTHOOD

Flatidae nymphs grow gradually through several moults. With each shed of skin, they inch closer to adulthood, eventually transforming into winged, leaf-like adults.

BLANKET OF FALLEN STARS

Some don’t make it through the journey. Their remains form a white blanket on the forest floor, looking like scattered snowflakes or starry dust left behind by tiny forest spirits.
