FISHTAIL PALM

Caryota urens, locally known as Bhillo Maad, is commonly called Fishtail Palm because its leaves resemble the shape of a fishtail.

TREE OF TROPICAL TREASURES

Native to Southeast Asia, including India and Sri Lanka, this palm is often planted for ornamental purposes along streets. But, beyond its appearance, it is truly a beneficial tree.

THE GIVER TREE

Traditionally, the tree has been used to extract toddy (used to make jaggery), sago, and starch from its fully mature trunk, which is why it is also known as the Toddy Palm.

NATURAL CHANDELIER

In spring, the tree puts on a captivating display with a long inflorescence of fruits hanging gracefully like natural chandeliers.

BE WARNED

These fruits may delight the eyes and feed animals in the wild, but they aren’t meant for human touch. Rich in oxalic acid, they cause irritation if touched or eaten.

GRACING FESTIVALS

And yet, Goans know how to work with nature’s moods. They carefully collect these fruits and weave them into stunning decorations for festivals.

FROM BEADS TO ROOFS

Nothing from the tree goes to waste. The seeds are turned into beads, the trunk supports buildings, and the leaves not only feed elephants, but are also used for thatching and weaving.

GOLDEN GOODBYE

Towards the end of its life, the dried flowers of the tree form a soft golden carpet under the tree, like a glowing farewell. Then, being a monocarpic tree, it bids adieu, having bloomed just once, but fully.

DIVINE PRESENCE

This tree is aptly considered a Kalpavriksha (divine wish-fulfilling tree) for the many gifts it offers. Its presence in village life makes it not just useful, but sacred, too.
