The Hindu holy month of 'Shravan' in Goa

Evelyn Siqueira

During 'Shravan', devotees fast and go on a strictly vegetarian diet, consuming only ‘shivrak’ food (bland food, which is devoid of onion, ginger and garlic) for the entire month
During this month, the Hindu community in Goa celebrates several festivals such as ‘Nag Panchami’, ‘Gokulashtami’, ‘Narali Pournima’ and ‘Raksha Bandhan’
Each day of the week is dedicated to a deity… Monday is dedicated to Lord Shiva
Tuesday is dedicated to Lord Ganapati
Wednesday is devoted to Lord Vittal
Thursday is dedicated to Lord Dattatreya
Friday is devoted to goddess Laxmi
Saturday is dedicated to the god Maruti
The fasting month is followed by the most important festival of Goan Hindus, Ganesh Chaturthi
