PLAYFUL BY NATURE

Otters are semi-aquatic mammals with sleek bodies and playful habits. They are gregarious and love living in groups.

AT HOME IN THE WILD

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Locally called ud or ud manjar, meaning 'water cat', they actually belong to the Mustelidae family, and not the feline (cat) family.

CLAWS, CRABS & CLUES

They are similar to cats in that they feed on fish and aquatic creatures, a trait that may have earned them their cat-related name. Their presence is often revealed by scat filled with crushed crab shells.

ECO-GUARDIANS

Otters play a vital role in the ecosystem by helping control fish populations and signalling a healthy freshwater environment.

OTTERS OF GOA

Goa is home to two of India’s three otter species — the smooth-coated otter and the Asian small-clawed otter. Unfortunately, both are now classified as vulnerable.

THE VANISHING TRAIL

Their population is declining due to loss of habitat, dynamite fishing, reckless construction, poaching, and being wrongly seen as a threat by fishermen.
