Want to preserve your varmala? Resin art is the answer

Abigail Crasto

Watching your little one taking those wobbly first steps, or bringing home your first pet puppy everybody has countless cherished experiences that they somehow wish to hold onto forever.

In the modern day, tiny mobile devices allow you to click and capture the silliest moments with the greatest ease.

But, somewhere there’s that desire to hang on to some sentimental keepsakes a little bit more.

As time flies, you wish you had a more tangible piece of that past, to remind you of your loved ones or that milestone.

And, this curiosity (and their creativity) has led two Goans to resin as a medium to treasure and give permanent shape to those unforgettable stories.

CREATIVE MIND: Taking time out to pursue her artsy hobbies, Simran created Trendyartz.

HOLDING ON TO MEMORABLE MILESTONES

Hailing from the village of Khandola, Marcel, Simran Deshpande went on to complete a postgraduate degree in food technology.

A background as a research scientist didn’t stop her from taking time out and immersing herself in creativity, which ultimately led her to create ‘Trendyartz’.

In 2017, she ventured into the art business with a little handmade jewellery, and since then, there’s been no going back.

“In 2021, I began creating resin art pieces, infused with real flowers,” recalls Simran, adding that her specialisation in resin art includes crafting frames, coasters, and jewellery made with real flowers.

“While earlier varmalas (garlands) were disposed of as soon as the wedding rituals ended, in recent times using resin art, we can preserve them forever,” she explains, adding that it’s a very special feeling to create art using these wedding varmalas for her customers.

FEELING SENTIMENTAL: Simran preserves wedding garlands and flowers, letting her customers cherish their special moments.

And while each varmala has a cherished memory, Simran says that besides these flowers, she also incorporates materials such as pet fur, chocolate wrappers and even infants’ umbilical cords to preserve stories and memories of her customers.

PRICE RANGE: Starting from Rs 1,000 depending on the customisation

TANGIBLE MEMORIES

In the quiet corners of her little workspace, Nikita Nanoo began her journey into the world of art over a year ago. Fuelled solely by curiosity and a deep-seated fascination for preserving memories through art, she started her brand, Curior.

Initially working with jewellery pieces, she soon got into a full-fledged exploration of resin art, delving into the realms of home decor, including resin tables.

SIGNATURE ART: Curior's handmade resin pieces are works of art.

“Starting out, it was all about trying things out and seeing where the resin would take me. There’s something oddly therapeutic about pouring resin, almost like watching a memory take shape right in front of your eyes,” she says.

Through it all, one thing that stood constant for Nikita was her obsession with making things by hand and paying attention to every little detail – preserving wedding flowers or any cherished occasion florals, crafting custom takeaways and favours, keychains, coasters, clocks, ashtrays, bookmarks, jewellery and more.

CUSTOMISED PIECES: Nikita crafts each piece, be it a delicate pendant or keychains with attention to detail.

There is an indescribable magic in turning a fragile rose into a pendant, or ornaments, a token of love and remembrance to be cherished forever.

“We began carving a niche in immortalising precious moments at Curior,” Nikita says. It’s this magic that infuses every creation of Curior, elevating it beyond mere art to a vessel of emotion and nostalgia.

PRICE RANGE: The cost of each piece crafted by Curior varies depending on its complexity and size; on sale pieces can be found on the website.
