Goa's sports events that stood out in 2024

The State is fast cementing its reputation as a sports tourism destination with the numerous sports events that have begun to be hosted here, some becoming a yearly draw for people the world over

Following the resounding success and experience it gained from hosting the National Games in 2023, Goa's rise as a sporting powerhouse soared to new heights in 2024.

The extensive improvements in sports infrastructure and its top-notch hospitality helped the State expand its sports offerings to athletes from across the country. Here's how Goa fared in sports in 2024.   

NATIONAL PARA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP 2024, PURPLE FEST

Starting in January, the International Purple Fest, Goa 2024, the much-anticipated annual event, continued its spectacular journey into the world of sports captivating audiences and filled with exhilarating competitions and unforgettable moments.

The event kicked off with a burst of energy as para-athletes from various disciplines showcased their prowess, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats. From heart-pounding races to skilful displays of athleticism, Purple Fest transformed into a hub of sporting excellence.

WTT STAR CONTENDER GOA 2024

Again, in January, towards the end, the WTT Star Contender Goa 2024 held in Mapusa was one of the most eagerly awaited sporting extravaganzas, which saw top players in action. World No 8 Felix Lebrun of France and Chinese Taipei's Cheng I-ching clinched the men’s and women’s singles titles in a magnificent display of table tennis.

As the action unfolded, with the best of the best battling each other for glory, the competition lived up to its expectations, leaving an indelible mark on the sporting world and had Goa basking in the global spotlight.

GOA IRONMAN 70.3 2024  

Bishworjit Singh Saikom of the Indian Army triumphed in the Ironman 70.3 triathlon held at Miramar in October. The remarkable victory earned him a coveted spot at the 2025 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Spain.

Ironman 70.3 has significantly boosted the State's image as a sports tourism destination, placing it firmly at the top of the list to keep a date with for athletes and sports enthusiasts. This year, the October humidity of Goa made the competition challenging for athletes who came from several parts of the world.

SKF GOA RIVER MARATHON

Over the years, Goa has become a go-to destination for athletes and fitness enthusiasts to compete in marathons held in the State. Among the top running events is the Goa SKF River Marathon which has become one of the best in India because of its global appeal.

Organised by the Vasco Sports Club and SKF India, this year the event saw a record turnout with 4,000 registrations to participate in its diverse range of race categories—5 km, 10 km, 21 km, 32 km and the full marathon 42 km.       

RUNNERS' MECCA: Goa is now a much sought-after destination for athletes seeking marathon glory.

4TH ASIAN ROLL BALL CHAMPIONSHIP    

Athletes from 12 nations came together at the 4th Asian Roll Ball Championship at the Manohar Parrikar Stadium at Navelim in December showcasing teamwork and camaraderie. In a thrilling final against Iran, the Indian women's roll ball team clinched the championship.
