EXPLORING ANOTHER SIDE OF GOA
In a recent trail, organised by The Local Beat, the Gomantak Times Digital team got a firsthand glimpse of the ‘other side’ of Goa.
Led by Mackinlay Barreto, The Local Beat is a travel initiative that curates immersive, locally-rooted tours across the State — trails that go well beyond the beaches and bring alive Goa’s rich hinterland culture.
Our destination, this time, was about an hour’s drive from Panjim. As we arrived at the trail’s starting point, our guide for the day, Raul da Costa, welcomed us with a smile and said, “This is a forest area where you’ll find a variety of trees and species. If you’re lucky, you might even spot bison and wild boars.”
“It’s better to talk loudly so the animals know there are people around — it might scare them off!” he advised.
With around 10 curious adventurers in our group, we set off eagerly into the monsoon-kissed forest.
INTO THE WILD – AND THE WONDERFUL
A short trek later, we arrived at a quaint, makeshift hut nestled in the woods. Welcomed by more members of The Local Beat team, we gathered to enjoy some refreshingly juicy watermelon and pineapple — a perfect pause in the humid wilderness.
Raul then invited us to engage with the forest in a fun, interactive way — by crafting our own cups using cashew leaves which we had picked up along the way. Why? For a traditional Goan feni shot, of course!
Next, those keen on a little more adventure were handed life jackets and guided to the Queen Waterfall, a hidden gem where the cool water and the sounds of nature made for an unforgettable experience.
TRADITIONS THAT TRAVEL THROUGH TIME
Back in the hut, Raul spoke about local customs passed down through generations. One such ritual, performed before sipping any alcoholic drink, was both, humorous and heartwarming.
“Hold the cup in your left hand,” he instructed, “then dip your right-hand index finger into the drink and sprinkle it over your left shoulder, then your right. And, if you feel that your forefathers were drinkers, you can give them some more,” he shared.
It was these small but significant moments — stories, sips, shared laughter— that made the experience feel authentic and connected to something deeper.

As the afternoon melted into evening, and we wrapped up with some delicious local food and a final social drink, one thing became clear — this was not just a trek; it was a journey into the cultural soul of Goa.
